Project Management

What is Project Management?

Project management is the discipline of planning, organising, executing and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. It has a definite start and and end time, projects are therefore not a continuous process. The output of a project is a goal/objective that must be completed in a specific time, within budget and according to a specification. Because of these attributes it is easier to measure the cost benefit of a project and in turn the impact to a business

In general terms, but this varies slightly between different project management framework, there are five process steps:

1. Initiating
2. Planning
3. Executing
4. Monitoring and Controlling
5. Closing

Also, based on the PMI’s Project management body of knowledge (PMBOK) the nine knowledge areas are:

1. Project Integration Management
2. Project Scope Management
3. Project Time Management
4. Project Cost Management
5. Project Quality Management
6. Project Human Resource Management
7. Project Communications Management
8. Project Risk Management
9. Project Procurement Management

Why would you need Project Management?

All Businesses have an operational side which deals with the day to day events. In order to move your business upwards and onwards, you need to plan and execute projects than may not be directly fall under operation management. These projects are usually an output of Strategic planning. As project are Impermanent by their nature, it make business sense to hire an external project manager for the duration of the project.
